Or, an alternative to having to minimize all windows to find media on
the desktop, the previously discussed Places menu.

I started a gnome-python applet as an implementation of that idea, but
I'm hoping that this will be in stock 2.10. If not, it looks like the
latest python bindings have all the gnomevfs goodness that I need to
finish off the drives 'n' volumes section of the menu.
Admittedly, this won't give an easy way to eject/unmount a removable
medium, although in a related complaint, the spatial nautilus view of a
drive or folder doesn't allow me to do anything to that object without
going to the parent folder. Specifically, I can't eject the CD from the
result of "nautilus /media/cdrecorder", and I can't rename
$HOME/Downloads without going to the nautilus window for $HOME.
I remember reading something recently that put the idea of the icon in
the top-left of the nautilus window's title bar representing the object,
and it's menu (or right-click menu) offering things like "Cut Folder",
"Copy Folder", "Rename", "Make Link", etc., but right now I cannot find
the original post. If only I had a beagle index of "all the web pages
that I've browsed"...
Nigel.
