Those links are, as I understand, just .desktop files, which are
standardized w/ and not just a custom GNOME format.

That's already (mostly) taken care of in that the API lets the app
specify if it can handle networked URIs or not.  Which may be a little
problematic since the app may handle http:// URLs but not, say, smb://
URLs, but oh well. :(
