I've posted my reasoning several times, going back to when gnome-common
first appeared...
Everything in gnome-common belongs somewhere else. glib, pkgconfig,
autoconf/automake themselves, gtk-doc, wherever.
There are a couple things in there that aren't a great fit for any of
those, but not enough to make it worth having a separate module.
gnome-common has nothing to do with GNOME. There's nothing
gnome-specific about it. At best we should have an autotools-addons
module (in fact there used to be such a thing on gnu.org, probably still
is).
gnome-common is like having gnome-make or gnome-bash or gnome-libtool.
