It works but takes some configuring. See

What we really need is a dialup app that will give you a list of
avaliable ppp connections and let you dial one. Once it is dialed
it should drop to the system tray.

This could be used in conjunction with the gst network tool, the redhat
network tool or any other tool for creating ppp connections. But IMHO
should be part of gnome-network not gst because 

When we have this then i think we can just kill modem lights. But for
the moment modem lights does work if you know how to configure it,
and I personally use it constantly and so am against getting rid of
it.
