You are right, in that it's a useful feature. However, we are in
feature-freeze time currently and you are talking about an API addition,
so this is not something to worry about for a while. (Plus, I personally
have slightly less than zero time to work on anything outside of my TODO
list for the next month or so. Some hard deadlines are approaching.)

I should point out, though, that my interest in this area is from the
point of view of an application, not an API in a library -- I saw
somebody using OS X and was impressed that they could type "open foo" in
a terminal and it would Just Work. So I wrote a small GNOME equivalent;
I think I pretty much emulated what gnome_url_show() does now.
