Just to round out the thread, I was the one who wrote the little app and
Louis mentioned an outstanding bug for libgnome. Being able to open
arbitrary files with one command line call efficient for me and I am
using it a lot.

I will change my little program to (conditionally) use the libgnome
change and send it to you (it was never available publically, since I am
the last remaining person in the world without a website).
