GNOME 2.2 supports the new startup notification standard written up on
freedesktop.org, however this will only currently work with GTK+ 2.x
software. Xalf was a sub-optimal hack - this has been discussed many times
on this list and gnome-hackers - please see the archives.

(Note that desktop-devel-list is not really the most appropriate place for
these sorts of queries.)
