Multiple instances of applets

Should all applets be required to allow multiple instances by the same
user? Or can I force only one instance of a particular applet to be
alive at one time? Although I haven't chosen one of the above, I do
believe that all applets should at least either work with multiple
instances or prevent a 2nd instance from starting.
