Some points:

1) CUPS isn't ubiquitous. I doubt it even has 50% of the print server
market on Unix systems

2) XD2 provides printers:/// over CUPS[1]

3) The drag-to-printers will (as far as I know) require a change to the
MIME system. I really hope that this is done for G2.4.

[1] Last month or so I started hacking on this too, but never finished
    it. I'm kinda of glad...
