Generation of background "previews" is too slow

Hello,

I've noticed that it takes quite a long time to generate previews for
"Picture Options" in Background Preferences.

On my P600 it takes up to 10 seconds to generate previews for 1600x1200
images and up to 5 sec for 1280x1024 images.

There should be a way to fasten up the process. i.e. the thumbnail
images could be saved somewhere, now they are being regenerated every
time you open Background Preferences or change the background image.

I've filed a bug on this at bugzilla as well (#81327)

Any thoughts?
