I'd heartily agree that 1.4.x should be supported for as long as
possible - since it has shipped in some recent distributions, and will
likely be part of the next RedHat release. I'm certainly going to
continue to use 1.4 on several machines in my charge. I'd also go as far
as to offer my assistance, though I doubt I could be particularly useful
as regards maintaining specific packages.
