It's a system specific or system configuration problem; while you
could file a bug in GTK+ to track the problem, it's unlikely that the
GTK+ team will be able to do anything to fix it.

(Note that if a font has:

 - No roman characters
 - No character for the "unknown glyph"

then seeing nothing when the font is displayed is expected for the
core X backend.)
