You need to point Xft at the directories where the fonts live by
editing /etc/X11/XftConfig (or, you may find it in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11).

Cool, that fixed me right up! Maybe these hints should be nominated for
a gnome 2 FAQ? ;-)
(ie use Pango font notation, fix XftConfig file)
We might also consider adding a part on how to enable font hinting in
freetype (its off by default in redhat). it improves the quality of the
truetype fonts a lot, especialy when dealing with anti-aliased fonts.
