major issues with panel

Have finally managed to compile gnome-panel (after removing
gnome-libs-1.4)
However the panel just seems totally messed up
All the applets overlay each other
I seem to have the panel repeating itself three times
anyone have any idea where the problem lies
Aside from this loads of functionality seems to be missing
