Well if you edit the defaults/mandatory database the
user does not get notifications of changes. Also it is not
possible to construct an arbitrary composite database and
edit that .. which would be nice imho.
So I started looking at all this a while back, with
a view to allowing gconf-editor to do this. The gconf
patches to make the above work are still sitting in bugzilla.
