Something like "jhbuild run gnome-session" should run your desktop.
Put that in ~/.Xclients, chmod +x ~/.Xclients, and run the "Default"
session from gdm. (Default = .Xclients)

Maybe Pango did not find and compile with fontconfig/Xft2; perhaps
fontconfig-devel was missing, or something like that.

You probably have to copy them to prefix/share/themes where you
installed the jhbuild build.
