OT - wierd oddity with automake

I have noted a really wierd behaviour with automake on my system.

When I run ./autyogen.sh (at least on gnome-vfs, nautilus) various files
like the intltools files, missing depcomp, install-sh get created in
the  top-level directory

I have seen this with 1.4,1.5 and 1.6

Anyone have any ideas whete to look for a reason
