I'm pretty sure it was (2) -- here's the relevant bit of the
IndexHelper log:

20070507 08:30:33.8825 07320 IndexH INFO: BEAGLE_EXERCISE_THE_DOG is set
20070507 08:30:34.1366 07320 IndexH DEBUG: Starting messaging server
20070507 08:30:34.4321 07320 IndexH DEBUG: Helper Size: VmRSS=12.4 MB, size=1.00, 0.0%
20070507 08:30:35.1669 07320 IndexH DEBUG: Checking for dangling locks...
20070507 08:30:35.1682 07320 IndexH WARN: Found a dangling index lock on /disk/scratch/.beagle/Indexes/FileSystemIndex/Locks/lucene-a9246cf6fe2ab70ef6b2801a8df6513c-commit.lock
20070507 08:30:35.1690 07320 IndexH DEBUG: Purging /disk/scratch/.beagle/Indexes/FileSystemIndex

Just to see, I've recompiled w/o the patch and will let it run for a
while, to see if the problem recurs or not.
