Media support comes from GStreamer, you should ensure that the appropriate gst-plugins- packages are available and installed.

These can be available for separate installation due to such things as being an uncommon codec, immature code or entirely unavailable due to patent and legal reasons as they apply to your distribution.

In short, this is a distribution matter not a Banshee matter, with the exception of binaries made available by the Banshee project such as our releases for Windows and OS X.
