Yes, the numbers are resolution caching for different locations (Now
Playing in the top bar, large on the "Now Playing" screen, album
browser, etc). IIRC then not all sizes are cached - if your media player
wants 57px images then it won't be cached, for example. I've patched my
Banshee to cache the right size for my Creative Zen.
Even when I've had Banshee find album art for me (which is normally not
great, because its sources often give low-res images, where as I use AT
LEAST 600x600px) then I've been able to replace it and have never had
the option disabled.
What happens when you quite Banshee and then run it with "--debug"? The
errors just look like MusicBrainz is giving bad data or has changed its
format or something.

I'm not sure but the varying folders correspond to picture sizes or
music player type; something like that.

Thank you BB. Firstly I have been using Banshee for several years
and had not noticed that it has to be playing before the manual
delete/add cover art function works! So that is solved.
As well as a 90 folder I have four other folders: 36, 42, 64 and
300. All a bit confusing and, as you say, the automatic download is
not entirely satisfactory. I will stick to manual addition in
future. Thanks for your help.

Yours is a batch problem: that is you have many cover art jpg's to
replace and your using auto fetch, which I am not using. So this
may not be helpful, but it's good to have someone to bounce off of
on these issues.
I'm using:
Ubuntu 12.04, Banshee 2.4.1 for this discussion
Ubuntu 13.04, Banshee 2.6.1 for reference and experimentation
Just to review what I had done, for clarity. I had used some
inferior jpg's and I wanted to replace them. Every time I tried
to do that with /delete file/, it kept going back to that cache
and finding that inferior file. I had to search out that location
and delete two files
home>.cache>media-art>/filename/ AND
home>.cache>media-art>90>/filename/
So, in both locations
This was a hack, that may be laborious for you and it does nothing
for the auto-file download. I get my cover art manually, mostly
for Wikipedia. Their 220x220 pix format was satisfactory.
MusicBrainz has been good for auto-fill of track titles, but cover
art is spotty and non-standardized.
That's enough for now...you may have sorted things out already

Thanks for your help. I renamed the .cache/media-art file,
started Banshee which recreated the file and automatically
downloaded some cover art - roughly half of my collection.
Unfortunately, the choose new cover art/delete this cover art
options are still greyed out so this was not the solution.
This was all working fine until yesterday when I used the
command "banshee --fetch-artwork". Any other ideas?

the cover art hides in a separate location. I had some
inferior Cover Art. To get rid of it I had to ferret out
this separate cache and delete the file there. Then I could
put the correct one in. If your still struggling, I'll see
if I can find it for you. I browsed the web for my fix,
should be out there.

Additionally I am now unable to add cover art manually,
the choose new cover art/delete this cover art options

Maybe I have to delete a corrupted file? Any help
