In case other people have the same problem with MTP devices and find this thread, I've found that the issue can also be that Gnome has acquired the device to mount it and so Banshee can't get hold of it.
Obviously that wasn't the case this time, but if it happens to your MTP device then close Banshee, reconnect the player, let Gnome detect it, unmount it and then run Banshee. In my experience, it'll then detect the player and sync perfectly fine (as long as you're got an old libmtp library or a really up to date Banshee with some patches in for library changes).
