For comparison, I loaded Rhytmbox and attempted a sync.  I got an error that
the device OS is "read only".  I was able to synch with iTunes on a Mac.  I
know that syncing to Banshee and iTunes is a non-starter.  In between, I
also reset the iPod to factory on iTunes and it still wouldn't sync with
Banshee.  This is starting to seem like it is a device issue, but any
thoughts would be appreciated.
