I guess I'm not clear on how you're using the external drive with
Banshee. Did you do Media -> Import Folder on it, so that the music
from it appears in your Music library? Or did you add a
.is_audio_player file to its root so that it appears as a device? If
you did the latter, it would indeed get rescanned on every Banshee
startup. That's what I was assuming you had happening in my previous
reply.
If you did the former, then it really shouldn't be slow to start, and
you should file a bug with the log attached.
