Sorry for ressurecting this topic, but since it was never solved, here is a
solution for those are with the same problem:

Download KeyTouch and configure your multimedia keys to execute a command.
These commands will handle Banshee's playback, like "$ banshee --stop". For
further information, read some KeyTouch howto and "$ banshee
--help-playback".

the multimedia keys require a gnome service currently as I recall. Under KDE that won't work but it should under GNOME.
