Not having heard from anyone, I went ahead and committed the bug report,
which mentions one additional fact I discovered after sending my
previous message: if I move the cover.jpg file to my desktop (for
example) I can successfully change the cover art, so it seems like it's
caused by a character in the path (maybe ':'). The bug report is
