After having a closer look, it didn't solve it completely. Banshee
claims that the N900 only supports WAV. There was a solution using a
.is_audio_player file once, but I thought that was obsolete? [1]
Everything on the N900's internal memory appears as "Sonstiges"/"Other"
(the yellow portion of the bar), the N900's memory card gets scanned
correctly.
I'm not sure if this is output of banshee --debug related:

I'm going to assume you're using 1.7.x as there was a bug in the
transition to GIO which caused this. This should've been fixed with
1.8.0. If you can reproduce the issue with 1.8.0 can you append the
information asked for here to a bug report:
http://live.gnome.org/Banshee/LibgpodTransition. Also run banshee in a
terminal with the "--debug" flag and attach the entire output.
Thanks!

Moin,
I connect my N900 to Banshee rather seldomly, so I cannot tell when
exactly
it stopped working: Banshee doesn't recognize both the N900's internal
memory and the sd card in it as mass storage devices. There's no
relevant
output when running Banshee from a terminal.
What can I do to find out more?
