I'm not sure exactly what is compiled with 1.8, but if you have both the gio and Hal backend in your extensions you could try disabling the gio backend to force the use of Hal which may allow you to use your device with 1.8. A bug report with all the udev, gio and banshee logs would be ideal to fix the issue properly.
