You can trigger this kind of quick browsing (type-ahead) by pressing '?' before you start typing the name of the artist.  If you're comfortable patching/compiling the development version of Banshee, you can get the functionality that you want with the patch from this bug report: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=608879
