The easiest workaround I had found for this was to simply issue - nautilus -q on the command line...
Plug your iPod in, nautilus window opens... eject your iPod, open a terminal or Alt+F2 and type nautilus -q
Unplug the iPod and plug it back in... nautilus won't open this time of course. I usually have to browse to the Main Menu --> Places --> iPod and open it again...
For whatever reason after you open nautilus browser the second time, Banshee will pick up the iPod. It does seem to take extraordinarily long to identify the contents though. But, it works...
