Hmm, that's very strange. What version of which distribution are you using?
If you don't mind also losing the notification area icon, you can go to Edit
> Preferences > Extensions and disable "Notification Area Icon" (probably at
the bottom of the list). If you disable that and these notifications keep
happening, then either this is a bug, you're using a strange notification
system, or we're not talking about the same thing. :)
