So for example, I listen to songs X and Y in album A, then go on to album B
and listen to a track W that's near the end of the album.  Afterwards I say
"Hey, I want to listen to this other song at the start of this album", so I
hit "previous track", and instead of going through songs before W in the
album, I go back to the previously played track, Y, from the other album.  I
hope that makes more sense.

Ah, I see. Definitely a valid case, and I think you'd get the most mileage out of playing out of your library and supplementing with the Play Queue. Ultimately, you won't be able to do exactly that with Banshee (though there's a bug with a lot of good progress made, see the bug for the background and the patch: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=428849).

The other possibility is to right-click on track W and select "Search > By Matching Album", which will search the current source for anything in that album. Won't work if you're in a source that doesn't have the rest of the album though (it will only search what's there).

Hopefully some of this is helpful? Let me know. :)
