If you're on a 64bit system, there's a known bug with libmtp >= 1.0.0 which has been fixed in git master. If possible, try either a daily build (if they're available for your distro) or compile banshee from source and test it to verify that your issue is resolved. Otherwise, please launch banshee in a terminal window and file a bug report with all the debug spew attached (assuming there isn't an existing bug with your issue).
