You have to be careful installing from source if you have packages
installed too.  I would recommend against doing it - either uninstall
the packages have, or don't install from source.

In general though, it sounds like you should wait for a new release.
If you're on SUSE or Ubuntu, you can test Alpha-quality packages, see:
http://banshee-project.org/download/
