I'm no Gstreamer expert, so standard disclaimer applies.

Banshee uses the playbin element for playback, and playbin then chooses
the right source element. If this choice can be influenced by some
configuration, it would be at the gstreamer level, but I'm not sure it's
possible.

So my guess is that's either a bug in GStreamer, or a problem in your
GStreamer installation.
