The only two places I know where you can find data about this is Debian
and Ubuntu. and it is from their popularity-contest systems. The other
distributions may have use statistics data but I do not know about them.

"Unfortunately" (for this question) the system is opt-in, its in an
attractive "advanced" button when installing Ubuntu, I don't know how
Debian does it. Also this only counts people using .deb packages.

However you can do some lazy math with it.

http://popcon.debian.org/by_vote

          Installed Votes
Debian: 966 259
Ubuntu: 29,040 3,284

Votes are ticked when the program is used within the past week or so.
For comparison Rhythmbox in Ubuntu has 350,229 installations (it's
installed by default by ubuntu-desktop) and 40,304 votes. This is out of
434,710 installations.

Last summer Canonical estimated there were between 6 and 12 million
Ubuntu users. This was mostly derived from unique IPs hitting the update
repositories (hence the optimistic 12 million to account for systems
behind a single IP, etc).

We can in a perfect world hope there is an even distribution of
popularity-contest users, but it's not really fair to extrapolate the
data like this because not all users are using GNOME, or are using
Ubuntu in places where Banshee would not be appropriate.

But using really lazy and prone to many variables math, there could be
between 45,000 and 90,000 active Banshee users running Ubuntu. But there
are definitely 3,284 :)

By the same bad math there could be 500,000 to 1,100,000 Rhythmbox
active users under Ubuntu (but we know about 40,304 for sure)
