Well, I have tested a little bit around and came to the following conlusion:
If you open an album with various artists and manually enable the option
"Artist of a compilation" in the Edit window of Banshee , then the album
will be shown as one in the area where you can scroll for albums. But the
enabled tag is not called albumartist, it's called "performer" as you can
see in Ex Falso for instance. This is true for .mp3 files. If the same is
done to a .flac file, then the tag is called "albumartist"!
Then the following statement about multi-artist support is wrong, because it
only applies for .flac files and not .mp3 due to my experience.

Is this a missunderstanding or a bug?

Träumerei is a .mp3 album, "Best of Best - Classical Piano Music" is .flac.
