Re: [Banshee-List] Banshee in Google Summer of Code

There have been a few mails about the potential for hacking on Banshee
in the Google Summer of Code, 2007.

I am planning on applying for a GSoC application outside of GNOME or
Mono within the next day or two. If the application is not accepted, I
can put a project under the Mono GSoC.

Myself and Gabriel Burt will be mentors. My only reservation is that I'm
not entirely sure of any good ideas for GSoc projects. So, now is the
time to reply (quickly!) with ideas. I know this is rather late, and my
apologies for that.

My feeling is that there is a *lot* of smaller things to do in Banshee:
things that don't necessarily constitute an entire summer of work, so
I'm thinking we can group a number of features, etc. together into
projects.

Anyway, for now, I'd be interested in just any kind of ideas for
potential Banshee GSoC projects, but again, reply quickly!

Just dumping what's in my head

+ Core functionality
   - Move my library (and its configuration) to another machine
   - Export playlists
   - User configurable "random play" in Edit/Preferences.  i.e., bias my
randomness to genre, artist, year, rating etc
   - Open a library from another location or computer
   - Assign a cover to an album or track or group selection (perhaps through
     the metadata option)

+ Collection Based Functionality
   - Automatic volume gain across a selection
   - Encoding rationalisation across a selection (i.e., make all of my selection
be encoded as MP3, 192Kbp VBR).  This is useful when one has a very
large collection, though I do recognise that the transcoder will do this when
copying the track to a device, this is about local disk space saving.

+ Plugin functionality
   - Stream a radio program to an MP3/OGG etc and add to collection
(this might have a schedule function with start time and duration)
    - Radio plugin should display schedule in channel properties

+ Device Based
   - Podcasts to Podcast folder
   - Playlists to Playlist folder on an iPod (or any other device)
   - Synchronize MP4 videos, (which have audio!) even if Banshee will never play
     video in situ
   - Synchronize a selection of tracks to a device (i.e., Shuffle, Garmin GPS) with
features such as "random populate until full"

Lots more I'm sure, hope this kicks off a discussion.
Steve.
