Well, I segregated some stuff, and let the importer run again, and it is picking everything up. It doesn't like the .aa .aiff, etc, but that is fine.
I guess we can log this one as problem solved.
Thanks to all who offered help. I have learned a lot (CVS, building packages, etc.), with this exercise.

I am noticing that the fan is running continuously when the import stalls, and when I run top, banshee is using up 100% of my CPU.

In the external drive where the music lives, there is a mix of folders containing .mp3's and other file types (.aa, .mp4a, etc.). Maybe I should put all the music in a single folder to segregate the other stuff from it.
I can try that.
Here is the output from terminal for tail:
roger macbook:~$ tail -f /var/log/messages
Sep 20 17:28:13 localhost syslogd 1.4.1#17ubuntu7: restart.
Sep 20 17:48:14 localhost -- MARK --
Sep 20 17:51:09 localhost gconfd (root-5602): GConf server is not in use, shutting down.
Sep 20 17:51:09 localhost gconfd (root-5602): Exiting
Sep 20 18:08:16 localhost -- MARK --
Here is what the debug log gave me:
Cannot connect to NetworkManager (I'm not using it, as it doesn't seem to work well with madwifi on MacBooks)
Doesn't seem to point to any one problem.

Have you tried running Banshee with 'banshee --debug' from a console
window? This will give additional indications.
In another window, you might also want to 'tail -f /var/log/messages' to
see if you're experiencing other difficulties (hardware etc)
If you see something of the error variety, post it here and we'll take a
look.
