So is it possible to separate one big file into some small tracks and
playback them in a gapless fashion? I though there was some
limitations of the mp3 format, but it was just my thoughs, not yet
proved. Something like "in a frame based format you should always play
the entire frame, even if it's the last frame of the file and contains
mostly silence ". Am I right about this? And is there a workaround for
a smooth playback without gaps? Maybe another format, maybe something
else...

That's a band-aid fix for the lack of support for gapless playback in
music players. Separating tracks is probably the better way to go if
that's how they are on the CD.
