This may sound like a stupid question, but was Banshee running? Music Applet doesn't (yet) have the ability to launch a music player if there isn't already one running, and the behavior you describe is exactly what happens if the applet can't find a music player running. Other things to check for: * Was Music Applet compiled with D-Bus support? The configure script will print a message at the end listing what players will be supported; if it flags Banshee as disabled, you'll need to install the -dev packages for D-Bus's GLib bindings first. * Is Banshee connecting to D-Bus? Run it from a terminal window and see if it prints a message saying it can't connect to the bus. Some recent versions of D-Bus have a bug in the C# bindings that can prevent it from connecting; see https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5716 . (This bit me on more than one occasion during development.)
