Maybe the addition of an itunes like checkbox for songs that are to be
played.

If you're not familiar with itunes, each song in the library has a
checkbox on the far left, checked by default.  If you uncheck a song it
remains in the library, but is not included when you play music (only
way it gets played is to select the song and click play).  A nice and
quick way to do what you're wanting.

Of course, that'd probably be a major change to banshee... :)
