Thanks for this quick answer.

Ok for gstreamer 0.10.

The Banshee FAQ says we can get AAC support with some GStreamer 0.8 packages
(http://banshee-project.org/Distributions/Ubuntu). Does this work for AAC
encoding and playback? Or must I forget AAC for time?

Playback of valid mp4/m4a is fine with GST 0.10. You just can't
encode to AAC correctly.

The ffmux_mp4 element exists, and works for GST 0.8, so you can make
valid mp4/m4a files with GST 0.8. I'm not sure whether Banshee ever
correctly encoded to AAC, though it would be (easily) possible to fix.
However, the GST 0.8 backend is deprecated, I think, so you'll need
to specifically build Banshee with GST 0.8 support if you want Banshee
to encode to AAC.
