OK - one note - I was using TLS, and it has to be IMAPS. (I noticed the wrong port being used in the wireshark captures.)

Side effect of switching to the new imap base layer (libnetclient) which uses the unified security configuration model. Sorry for the confusion…
TLS still works for my Yahoo imap access and my privateemail.com imap access. It was the difference that caught me - but then, that's gmail, I suppose.

At least now it shows up in the folder list as expandable, even if I'm not getting any real content yet. I'm also now seeing some imap debug output, when there was none before.
and one more restart of Balsa and it started working as expected, so I'm back in business.

You could run Balsa with debug messages, i. e.

        G_MESSAGES_DEBUG="imap libnetclient" path/to/balsa
I was first using "all" and switched to only "imap" when there was too much overhead from my untroubled pop3 access. Is the list of possibilities for G_MESSAGES_DEBUG documented anywhere?

and see what happens.

Hope this helps,
Albrecht.

What started all of this was a sent message I managed to not save a local copy of. Problem with gmail is once you have downloaded a message by pop3, there seems to be no way to reset it to download again. I needed imap access to get at it (in any gmail folder to copy to a local folder. The other thing I sometimes check is the spam folder, since there seems to be no way to download it anyway and make my own spam decision locally. In an attempt to turn down gmail's spam threshold, I need to use their web access to mark as not spam - unless anyone has a better way.

I'll play more with both imap and libnetclient turned on, but I still wonder if there could/should be more specific imap debug output. However, I probably won't have any need for it again for at least a few months :-)

Jack
