Balsa still links to libesmtp:

$ ldd `which balsa` | grep smtp
        libesmtp.so.6 => /lib64/libesmtp.so.6 (0x00007fc927cee000)

Pawel has worked on fixing at least one security issue since Brian went  
out of sight.
