Ok, following up to myself: just one more detail, since I was running
2.0.16 and it just froze/crashed again. I wasn't running it under gdb at
the time, but I got this on the console:

free(): invalid pointer 0x8395b98!

and stracing both balsa processes yields this:

nuno@hobbes:~/News/Pan/1$ strace -p 2884
Process 2884 attached - interrupt to quit

< nothing, so I ^C out of it >

Process 2884 detached

meanwhile, the other is spinning in:

nuno@hobbes:~$ strace -p 2893
Process 2893 attached - interrupt to quit
getppid()                               = 2884
poll([{fd=22, events=POLLIN}], 1, 2000) = 0
getppid()                               = 2884
poll([{fd=22, events=POLLIN}], 1, 2000) = 0
getppid()                               = 2884
poll([{fd=22, events=POLLIN}], 1, 2000) = 0
getppid()                               = 2884
poll([{fd=22, events=POLLIN}], 1, 2000) = 0
getppid()                               = 2884
poll([{fd=22, events=POLLIN}], 1, 2000) = 0
getppid()                               = 2884
poll([{fd=22, events=POLLIN}], 1, 2000) = 0
getppid()                               = 2884
poll([{fd=22, events=POLLIN}], 1, 2000) = 0
getppid()                               = 2884
poll([{fd=22, events=POLLIN}], 1, 2000) = 0
getppid()                               = 2884
poll([{fd=22, events=POLLIN}], 1, 2000) = 0
getppid()                               = 2884
poll([{fd=22, events=POLLIN}], 1, 2000) = 0
getppid()                               = 2884
poll([{fd=22, events=POLLIN}], 1, 2000) = 0
getppid()                               = 2884
poll( <unfinished ...>
Process 2893 detached

endlessly.

I'll try running it under gdb from now on, to see if I can get a more
meaningful trace.

Regards,

		Nuno
