Hi Paul,

   what i did is just:

#emerge aspell (because i remember that pspell need either
                 ispell or aspell, but aspell is newer...)
#emerge balsa  (and balsa emerged also pspell...)

if it still crashes, try removing balsa config file
(it's $HOME/.gnome/balsa)
