unexpected mailbox deletion

Trying to get Balsa to read a mail file which CSCmail had somehow
corrupted, I added the file as a new Maildir mailbox (~/box). It of
course couldn't read the file, so I changed the path to point at
(~/dead.letter) and clicked Update. I returned to properties, verified
that the path still pointed at dead.letter, and deleted the box. Both
files (~/box and ~/dead.letter) were deleted.

To verify:
[jack@felix jack]$ cp minicom.log dork.file
in Balsa: File > New > Local Maildir box > Browse > dork.file
select dork, get 'is not a mailbox' error.
	  right-click dork > Properties > Browse > minicom.log > Close
[jack@felix jack]$ grep dork -b5 .gnome/balsa
2819-0=^(([ ]|[A-Z])*[|>:}#])+
2846-
2847-[mailbox-1]
2859-Path=/home/jack/minicom.log
2887-Type=LibBalsaMailboxMaildir
2915:Name=dork
2925-
2926-[History: Mailbox Path]
2950-0=/home/jack/minicom.log
2975:2=/home/jack/dork.file
2998-3=/home/jack/dead.letter
in Balsa: right-click dork > Delete
[jack@felix jack]$ ls mini*
ls: mini*: No such file or directory
[jack@felix jack]$ ls dork*
ls: dork*: No such file or directory

And to top it off, I never did figure out what CSCMail had done to screw
up my mail file -- it looked like a normal mailbox, but couldn't be
viewed by Pine or Balsa, even if cat'ed onto the end of a good mailbox.
