File selection bugs

Hi,

I know it's really a gtk issue, but I don't see it getting fixed anytime
soon: When saving a file, changing directories will make the filename
disappear, so visual selection of a destination directory is not possible.
When opening files, the file selector doesn't honor the gmc "Show all files"
setting, so dotfiles aren't shown.

This is particularily bad fpr me, because I keep current work in progress on
my desktop. The desktop is in .gnome-desktop (note the dot!), so I can never
visually select it. I always have to specify the filename to save to my
typing .gnome-desktop/ in front of the filename given as default.
In my opinion, this is REALLY _bad_! It's ok for apps I don't use everyday,
all day, it's not ok for Balsa, IMHO.
Now, before I do another file selector and then get chided for it because
"this is a gtk isssue, it doesn't belong in Balsa", I would like to find out
what's being though about the issue first.

My idea would be something like a comfortable file selector, looking much
like the gtk one, but with options to directly navigate to certain
directories with a simple drop-down. These directories could even be
inserted into the path drop-down to preserve the existing layout.

I would have the desktop, the home directory and the 4 most often used
directories from the last 20 directories used.
And, of course, fix the disappearing file name bug.

So, opinions, please!

Melanie
