You could do this:
open a terminal, then type
ln -s .gnome-desktop MyDesktop
close the terminal

now just open MyDesktop and you are in your .gnome-desktop.

I'm not really a fan of the gtk file selector either, but that's because
it's not a terminal :) It does have it's good sides though, if you just
start typeing the name of the file you wany, then hit tab, it will
auto-complete, useful and much faster than navigating the lists....
