A lot of web pages, probably most, are written to cause browsers to render in
Quirks Mode, which maximizes differences among browsers. They should be
instead written to render in Standards Mode, which maximizes similarities
among browsers, by conforming to standards. What causes a browser to render
in one mode or the other is called DOCTYPE switch. See
